There is no prerequisite for AAC. Introducing AAC in the early stages of a child's life helps children communicate more effectively. Above shown a graphic to help understand how AAC helps with language learning.

With AAC, child receives visual, auditory and tactile input during communication. They get to look at the symbols/icons, points and select the icons, and listen to the feedback upon tapping on the icon as well as communication partner's verbalization.

However, with the absence of AAC, communication partner such as parents or teachers rely on speaking or providing verbal instructions. Occasionally, gestures were used. The child primarily receives information through auditory cues, supplemented with a few gestures. Verbal cues were often ignored, making the communication challenging.

AAC takes time, but it's worth it!

How to choose the right AAC for your child?
  1. Evaluate the Child's Needs

    1. Is the child unable to speak or is their speech difficult to understand?

    2. Are there any physical limitations that could impact how the child uses the device?

  2. Seek Professional Assistance

    1. In Malaysia, Speech Therapists play a crucial role in assessing and recommending the most suitable AAC system for the child.

    2. When a child faces physical challenges, collaborating with physiotherapists/occupational therapists can help enhance motor skills or adjust the positioning of the AAC device (e.g., using a head switch for individuals with Cerebral Palsy).

  3. Choosing Between Low-Tech and High-Tech

    1. There is no requirement to start with low-tech before transitioning to more advanced high-tech devices.

    2. High-tech AAC devices offer extensive customization options, promoting efficiency and eliminating the need for printing and cutting. Some apps also has the feature for 'typing'.

    3. In some cases where the child exhibits aggresive behaviours such as throwing the ipad, speech therapist might recommend a low-tech AAC System (printed communication board/book)

    4. Cost and Accessibility

      1. Ensuring constant accessibility to the AAC system is crucial. Children should be able to use their AAC system whenever they wish to communicate a request, comment, ask questions, or initiate an interaction.

      2. AAC devices or tools come in a wide range of costs, including both free and paid versions. It is essential for speech therapists to recommend one that suits the child's communication needs.

    5. Support and Training

      1. It is important for everyone - parents, teachers, and caregivers - to learn how to operate the device. Providing good support and fostering an AAC-friendly environment significantly improves the implementation of AAC. Children learn by observing communication partners repeatedly.

      2. Crucially, the child's AAC needs can change over time. Regular evaluation of the child's progress and making adjustments (when needed) are important.

      3. Integration of AAC into daily activities helps familiarize children with its usage.
